Bad Feminist shows this extraordinary writer’s range-in essays about Scrabble, violence, fairy tales, race, The Hunger Games, longing, and Sweet Valley Confidential, Gay is alternately hilarious, full of righteous anger, confiding, moving: Bad Feminist is like staying up agreeing and arguing with the smartest person you ever met. There are writers who can show you the excellence of their brains and writers who show you the depths of their souls: I don’t know any writer who does both at the same time as brilliantly as Roxane Gay. We should all be lucky enough to be such a bad feminist. With prodigious bravery and eviscerating humor, Roxane Gay takes on culture and politics in Bad Feminist-and gets it right, time and time again. Presidential Endowed Professor of Political Science at Wake Forest University How can you help but love this author? Melissa Harris-Perry, Host MSNBC’s “Melissa Harris-Perry” As a result, we complete this book both more powerful and more vulnerable, just like Gay herself. Gay gives us permission to take up the sword of feminism while laying down the shield of policed authenticity. This is the text for those of us who constructed our feminism from the pages of teen chick lit as much as from the musings of post-modern theorists. "Wildly entertaining." - The New York Times Book Review I love the ancient world, and very little historical fiction has been written on this era. This one really caught my eye because it is set in the ancient kingdom of the Hittites in the early Iron Age. But that doesn’t even scratch the surface of all these two have done, which includes sci-fi, great music and contracting to the Department of Defense on non-lethal weapon technology. With her husband, Chris, also a great writer, the two are a superhero duo of story telling. Throughout the series and the novels that followed, her stories, for me, were the keystone of Thieves’ World. Especially when I read the second book in the series and met Janet’s character, Tempus in “Vashanka’s Minion”. I’m not looking to hurt anyone’s feelings if you have been hurt by SJM - you are valid, and if the book means more than words to you - you are valid. This review isn’t going to be a drag or a gush, it’s just going to be my thoughts and feelings on what I did love and what I did hate. And, in true Sarah J Maas fashion, the book was ungodly longer than it truly needed to be. And I always feel like the characters I do end up liking from this world, get the bad end of the stick. I’ve had a rocky journey with Throne of Glass even before it became “cool” to dislike this series and even before the stans thought it would be “cooler” to ignore all the gross, problematic elements. Here is the thing – if you have loved this series from the start, you are probably going to love this conclusion and be very happy upon turning that last page. It reminds me of reading Harry Potter with my friends back when I was little, and there really are no words to even begin to describe that feeling, because it truly transcends words and language. All of us updating, crying, and swooning at the same times all over social media. And there are no words I have to describe the feeling that I get while reading a book with what feels like the entire book community. I had a good time reading Kingdom of Ash. “Once upon a time, in a land long since burned to ash, there lived a young princess who loved her kingdom…” #0.4) The Assassin and the Underworld ★★★★★ #0.1) The Assassin and the Pirate Lord ★★★ (Thank you so much, Alex, for this tour edition! I love you!) God’s power is not absolute in the sense that God can do anything ( potestas absoluta) rather, God’s power ensures that He can do all that is logically possible for Him to will to do. His power, knowledge, and presence ensure that His goals are met, that His designs are fulfilled, and that His superintendence of all events is (to God, at least) essentially “risk free.” Each assertion is a variant of divine sovereignty. Traditional theism insists that God is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent-all powerful, all knowing, and everywhere present. There was no metaphysical “necessity” to create it was a free action of God. And these came into being ex nihilo-out of nothing. And then there was something: matter, space, time, energy. “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” ( Gen. But at its heart, it is saying nothing different from the assertion of the Nicene Creed: “I believe in God, the Father Almighty.” To say that God is sovereign is to express His almightiness in every area. Put this way, it seems to say something that is expressly Reformed in doctrine. To put this another way: nothing happens without God’s willing it to happen, willing it to happen before it happens, and willing it to happen in the way that it happens. That is a central assertion of Christian belief and especially in Reformed theology. God is sovereign in creation, providence, redemption, and judgment. The author manages to capture the innocence of a time when all this was real and possible. Camping under open skies, swimming in clear water, fishing, exploring and making discoveries is the stuff of dreams which serves to make this so charming a tale. But in time a truce is called and the Swallows and Amazons become firm friends. At first they are angry at the invasion of their peaceful haven by these Amazon pirates, Nancy and Peggy, who claim ownership of the land. All seems well until they encounter their enemy. It is the wholesome story of four young children, John, Susan, Titty and Roger, who set out in their boat (the Swallow of the title) to an island of adventure. He used many of these holiday settings for his children's stories, notably the much loved Swallows and Amazons, a book that sits comfortably in the category of "timeless classic" and remains one of his most popular titles for young people. As a child he enjoyed active, outdoor holidays: sailing, camping and exploring the countryside. Born in Leeds in 1884, it was his father, a nature-loving history professor, who inspired his love of the outdoors and nurtured a passion for fishing. Arthur Ransome was a prolific writer of children's books.
